Asylum Chapel
Second year project
The brief for this project was to transform a disused chapel in Peckham into a performing arts centre for the community. The client for the project was David Glass who founded the lost child project.
I designed my theatre to be a safe space for teenagers and young adults from the Southwark area. The gentrification of Peckham and the wider area has meant that many community centres and places for the local youth are being replaced by housing developments and retail for people moving into the area instead of those who grew up there. This space will be dedicated to those vulnerable and marginalised young adults. I was inspired by David Glass lost child project and have designed the space to accommodate similar projects. The site is located near schools and universities which would be invited to participate in workshops and theatre productions. The Asylum chapel was originally built as a home for retired landlord with the name 'asylum' meaning to give safety and sanctuary. I have designed my theatre to have the same purpose.
